Lake Helen
One of the first to settle in Lake Helen was James H. Prevatt. He is believed to have arrived in 1858. Prevatt built a log
home on the east side of of the largest lake on what is now known as Lemon Avenue.
Prevatt set about farming, surrounding his home with orange trees, figs, and crape myrtle. He grew corn and
cotton and his
land holdings grew and prospered. The area became known as the "Prevatt Settlement."
He was named county judge and also served as county treasurer and superintendent of schools. In 1876, Prevatt built a provisions
store. Before this it was necessary to travel to Enterprise or Blue Springs for provisions.
After the death of
Prevatt in 1883, Henry A. DeLand was able to buy 340 acres of the Prevatt
Estate.
Enamored by the natural beauty
of the estate, DeLand re-name the lake and the Prevatt Settlement Lake Helen after
his daughter. DeLand established a sawmill, built a hotel and the low key
boom was off and running. His goal was to build one of the nicest and most pleasant
towns in Florida.
