South Daytona

Year of Municipal Incorporation: 1951

Origin of City Name: Derived from the community’s related position to and association with the City of Daytona Beach.

Former Name: Town of Blake (1878), possibly named after Lieutenant Jacob E. Blake, an engineer involved in the 1843 government survey of Volusia County. Town of South Daytona (1938), in the late 1920s the Town of Blake was annexed into the newly consolidated City of Daytona Beach against the desire of its residents.  Soon after a petition was filed with the state by affected residents to withdraw from the corporate limits of Daytona Beach.  The request was granted in 1938 and the Town of South Daytona was formed.

First Post Office Established: August 19, 1878 (under the name of Blake)

Much of the area now occupied by the City of South Daytona was originally unoccupied land owned by the Swift brothers, a major Nineteenth century timber interest in the State of Florida.  The sale in 1878 of a large holding in this vicinity to the East Florida Orange Lands Company was indicative of fevered land speculation at the time.  Subsequently the new owners sold off smaller tracts to individuals interested in starting citrus groves.

Population (2000 U.S. Census):             13,177  (9th largest of 16 Volusia cities)
